Mahatma: Gandhi’s Life in Colour – GandhiServe India, Foreword by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak (Hardcover)

Mahatma: Gandhi’s Life in Colour is a monumental photo biography of Mahatma Gandhi. Across 692 large-format pages, 1,281 photographs from his life, once seen only in black and white, appear in colour, many of them rare and drawn from archives around the world.

About the book

The book was compiled and published in 2016 by GandhiServe India. Gandhi scholars, historians, photo experts and graphic designers worked together on the project. Each photograph was scanned, cleaned and then colourised by hand, with the colours chosen to match the historic settings, so that the pictures come closer to the scenes they recorded rather than altering them.

The project carries forward a wish of Devadas Gandhi, the Mahatma’s son, who began collecting photographs of his father during Gandhi’s lifetime. The first copy was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 October 2016, Gandhi Jayanti. The foreword is by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, sociologist and founder of the Sulabh sanitation movement.
