About the Author

Professor Alok Tripathi (b. 1965) is a leading archaeologist in the country. He was founder head of the Underwater Archaeology Wing in the Archaeological Survey of India and conducted underwater archaeological excavations off Bangaram Island (Lakshadweep), Mahabalipuram, Dwarka, Elephanta, and other sites. As a deep sea diver he is a renowned authority in the Asia-Pacific region on underwater archaeology. Presently Director, Centre for Archaeology and Museology, and Head, Department of History at Assam University, Silchar, he holds equal authority in field archaeology, museology, heritage management, art and architecture, laws, remote sensing, and art history. Widely travelled in several countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia, he has successfully executed many prestigious projects and directed important archaeological excavations on land as well as underwater. He is author and editor of over 10 monographs and 75 research papers and was listed among the ten brightest young scientists in the country.
