The Last Color: Now a Major Motion Picture by Vikas Khanna | Hardcover | Old Book

About the Book

The Last Color by Vikas Khanna is a deeply moving and beautifully layered story set against the vivid backdrop of Varanasi — India’s most sacred city. Now adapted into a critically acclaimed major motion picture, this hardcover edition is a must-read for lovers of literary fiction rooted in Indian culture and social justice.

The Story

It’s Holi, 2012 — the Hindu festival of spring. A young advocate returns to Varanasi after twenty years to celebrate a landmark Supreme Court order against the age-old tradition of social injustice inflicted upon the destitute widows of India, to whom even the simple joy of colour was denied.

Twenty years earlier, Choti, a spirited young tight-rope walker, befriends Noor — an elderly widow living a life of complete abstinence in an ashram. Despite their vastly different worlds, the two form an unlikely and tender bond. Noor’s memories of playing Holi dressed as Radha, flinging bursts of her beloved pink gulal into the sky, fill Choti with wonder. Choti promises her they will celebrate the next Holi together.

But when Choti witnesses the murder of her friend Anarkali at the hands of a corrupt police chief, she is imprisoned on the eve of Holi. As chaos unfolds, one question remains: Will Choti be able to keep her promise?
